St. Charles Community Health Center has received a Johnson & Johnson “Community Health Care Award” and a two-year grant in recognition of its efforts on behalf of underserved pregnant women in southeast Louisiana.
The health center will use the grant to fund a “pregnancy program” that will primarily serve Hispanic women.
Many Hispanic babies are born prematurely, and the rate has grown more than eight percent in the last decade.
The new program is expected to be a model of care that addresses issues caused by a lack of health care, providing affordable prenatal care to women unable to afford such treatment.
“St. Charles recognizes the needs of our population and, because of the Johnson & Johnson Community Health Care grant, we can reach more of the people that need assistance,” Mark Keiser, executive director of the health center, said.
