Destrehan Plantation invites the public to dive into Louisiana’s past and walk in the footsteps of history through music, dance, demonstrations, exhibits and hands-on activities during its annual Heritage Day.
The event will be held Friday, April 28, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The plantation is located at 13034 River Road in Destrehan.
Brenda Benoit, the coordinator of heritage education at Destrehan Plantation, said Heritage Day is a family-friendly event that is open to the public and designed for all ages.
“The kids don’t realize that they’re learning so much throughout the event,” she said. “It’s a total immersive experience.”
Demonstrations of butter making, candle dipping, needlework, trapping, and many other old-time activities will take place at the event. The day will also feature a petting zoo, live music, dancers, and actors portraying War of 1812 soldiers. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.
The day is funded, in part, by a grant from United Way of St. Charles. Benoit said Heritage Day pays tribute to the many cultures – including Native American, French, Spanish, African and German – that came together to make Louisiana unique.
Heritage Day visitors may choose to participate in the activities only or in combination with a guided tour of a slave cabin and the main house. Admissions fees are as follows: Heritage Day activities only – $10 per child (ages 7-17) and $13 per adult. Children 6 and under are free.
Heritage Day activities coupled with a guided tour of slave cabin and plantation home are $13 per child (ages 7-17 years) and $26 per adult. Children 6 and under are free.
