The Council On Aging senior citizen activity centers serve as community focal points where older residents can receive meals, supportive services and can participate in planned socialization, recreation, education and health maintenance activities – and there are many excellent events planned for September. Here are just a few:
• Buddy Bingo Brunch – Sept. 8 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Norco center. Call Paula at 985-764-7025 for lunch reservations or more information.
• Back-to-School Spelling Bee – Sept. 11 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and a Scavenger Hunt from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Luling center. For more information and lunch reservations, call Sharyn at 985-785-1981.
• Fiesta Day – Sept. 16 from noon to 2:30 p.m. at the Hahnville center. Enjoy a day of music, dancing, food and games. For more information and lunch reservations, call Lauren at 985-783-3008.
• Steak Out Dinner – Sept. 19 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the New Sarpy center. Menu includes a charbroiled rib-eye steak, baked potato, steamed broccoli, Texas toast and apple pie. Tickets and reservations are required. Call Cara or Stephanie at 985-783-6683 through Sept. 12 for reservations.
• Exercise classes – Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Fitness Club on Highway 90 in Boutte.
• Computer classes – Every third Tuesday of the month from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the Hahnville center. The next class is scheduled for Sept. 16.
• Senior Dancers – Every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Hahnville center. Teacher is Judy Goutierrez.
• Bidding 500 Card Club – Every Monday at the Hahnville center. Beginners workshop is from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. with avid team play from noon to 3 p.m.
• Blood pressure checks – The second Wednesday of the month at 10:30 a.m. at the Norco center and at noon at the New Sarpy center. The third Wednesday of the month at 10:30 at the Hahnville center and at noon at the Luling center.
• The Literary Circle of Friends – A book reading and writing group that meets every Friday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at 145 Angus Dr. in Luling. Call Sharyn at 985-785-1981 for lunch reservations and/or transportation.
• Morning Coffee Social – The first Monday of the month at the Luling center from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
• Craft Workshop – The first Thursday of each month at the New Sarpy Center from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
• Bonco Party – The second Monday of each month at the Norco center from noon to 2 p.m.
• Travel Club – The second Wednesday of each month. The next trip is planned for Jean Lafitte Museum and Bubba II Restaurant in Thibodaux on Sept. 10. By reservation only. Call 985-783-6683 to schedule reservation.
• COA Cafe’ – The fourth Wednesday of each month at the Luling center. Next meeting is scheduled from Sept. 24. By reservation only. Call 985-783-6683 to make reservations.
• Line Dancing – Every Wednesday at the Hahnville center from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
• Pokeno – Every week at each center. Call 985-783-6683 for detailed times.
• Baking – Every Thursday from noon to 2 p.m. at the Hahnville center.
• Coffee Social – Every Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Luling center.
• Consumer Rights Seminar – Capital Area Legal Services will present a meeting on consumer rights on Wednesday, Sept. 10 from 10:30 a.m. from 11:30 a.m.
• Super Bingo, Bingo and other afternoon card game sessions – Every week at all centers. Call 985-783-6683 for details.
• Karaoke Day – Friday, Sept. 5 at the New Sarpy center.
Transportation is also available for seniors to meal sites, banks, medical facilities and for shopping. It is available daily, but must be scheduled and requested ahead of time.
The center also provides hot and nutritious meals every Monday through Friday at each senior center.
