Church will egg your yard to help fight cancer

The Hope Church of St. Charles’ Team “Get Your Hopes up” has found a new way to get the Easter Rabbit to help raise money for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

The fundraiser is called “Egg my Yard” and allows individuals to buy candy-filled eggs that team members will deliver and will even scatter in the front lawn. Deliveries will be made on the night of March 26. On Easter morning, the kids find the yard covered in eggs.

“We already have 30 orders,” said team member Michelle Dyess. The orders represent about 1,200 eggs. “Each egg order will contain one empty egg. This egg is a reminder of Jesus empty tomb.”

The eggs are being bought pre-filled, which in itself is helping a nonprofit center that employs disabled people who do the stuffing, Dyess said.

“People say it’s a fun, new cute idea,” she said of local buyers’ description of a concept that she found on the Internet but is new to St. Charles Parish. It had to be new because she said they would not initiate a fundraiser that would cut into anyone else’s efforts.

“We are a new team,” she said of the church’s first year participating with Relay for Life. “We have two cancer survivors in our church congregation and we were looking for a way to give back to the community and be active in the community. We felt this was a worthwhile cause that touches all people. Cancer is something that people deal with in their life – unfortunately.”

The Relay For Life program is a community-based event where teams and individuals raise money to support cancer research by setting up themed campsites.

This year’s Relay theme is Dr. Seuss.

Each team will be assigned a Dr. Seuss book as its campsite theme.

Dyess’ team theme is based on the book, “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!” and each team must decorate its campsite based on the book.

Each team has at least one participant on the track at all times with Cancer survivors and caregivers taking a celebratory first lap to start each event.

Yearly, more than four million people participate in more than 6,000 events worldwide to support the Society’s mission to finish the fight against cancer once and for all.

St. Charles Parish’s Relay for Life event will be held Sept. 17 at the West Bank Bridge Park.

Hope Church of St. Charles is a relatively new addition to the Luling community.

Organized two years, the church’s interdenominational congregation’s mission is,  “Love God, Love People and Be Generous.”
