Book review: “Afterparty”

Reviewed by Lauren Beadle

Afterparty, a realistic fiction novel written by Ann Redisch Stampler, explores the life of a teenage girl as she travels around North America with her father.

Throughout the novel, the main character, Emma, moves across the continent with her father. They finally settle in California, where she begins her junior year in high school.

She seems to be very different from the other students, but she finally feels like she belongs after meeting Siobhan.

Siobhan soon becomes her best friend although she proves to be a bad influence on Emma’s new life in California. They become jealous of each other’s actions and soon are not the best of friends any more. Emma lives a secret life of partying in California, and her father is soon going to find out.

I enjoyed Afterparty very much because it described the way that a person can change just by changing where she lived and who she met. I never realized the amount of impact a person or place could have on someone.

Lauren Beadle will be a senior this fall in the Gifted program at Hahnville High. She enjoys playing softball, hanging out with friends and being outdoors.

Editor’s note: Book reviews are published weekly during the summer in agreement with Hahnville High School gifted English teacher Deborah Unger in conjunction with the Brown Foundation Service Learning Program.
