Mya LaGrange, a Destrehan High School student, won first place at the St. Charles Parish American Legion Oratorical Contest this year. Coming in second place was Kate Induni, a student at Hahnville High School.
LaGrange, a junior, was announced the winner at the Jan. 13 contest held at the St. Charles Parish School Board Office. She has also won both the parish and district competitions. Faye Kindl is Mya’s speech coach. LaGrange’s speech, entitled “The Constitution: An Optimistic Approach,” was made up of both a nine-minute prepared text and an impromptu speech on a chosen topic.
The parish competition was held on Jan. 17 where her impromptu speech was on the 27th Amendment. The district competition was held Jan. 27 at the Harvey-Marrero American Legion Post No. 222 in Marrero. The 10th Amendment was the impromptu topic for this competition.
She will be traveling to Shreveport to compete in the state competition on March 5.
LaGrange was also one of only four students chosen from the United States to attend the Global Young Leaders Conference last year in Washington D.C. She hopes to have a future career in international journalism.
