St. Charles Parish Public Library to host family craft-making event, other holiday programs

Jingle all the way to the St. Rose Public Library on Monday, Dec. 16 for a family holiday craft event.

The Winter Elf Creations event from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. invites families to create their own stuffed winter elf with materials supplied by the library.  Residents can register for the free event online at the St. Charles Parish Public Library website, or they can register in person at any library location. Registration will close the day before the event or when all spots are filled, according to Lauren Campo Pitz, assistant director of the St. Charles Parish Public Library

“We like to find crafts and activities that entire families – from the very youngest members to the oldest – can help create and have fun doing it,” Pitz said. “Plus, who doesn’t love an elf? We have done similar [events] before, like last year’s Build a Snowman program, but this year’s Winter Elf Creation is new.”

Pitz said attendees will stuff socks to make their own elf and decorate it with a variety of craft supplies.

“We are looking forward to seeing what everyone’s elf looks like,” she said. “Even though you give everyone the same supplies to pull from, each elf will look different and have its own personality. We also love seeing families work together and help each other out.”

Other library branches will also host holiday themed events on Dec. 16. The Norco Branch will host a Cocoa and Cookie Decorating event for middle and high school students from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Paradis Branch will host the Ugly Sweater Weather Shenanigans event designed for adults from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.  The event will include an ugly sweater contest, a Christmas BINGO game and refreshments.

“We do love planning events all year, and we love spreading holiday cheer at them,” Pitz said. “It’s easy to get overwhelmed with everything going on in the world and in our lives, so it’s important to carve our time for ourselves and our families, especially during the busy holiday season, when many calendars are filled up with parties and other commitments. Coming to the library is a free, very low-pressure way to do something for yourself.”

Pitz said in addition to the holiday events, the library also has books and online resources related to the season.

“If you want to learn more about Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa, read a novel, listen to holiday music, or watch a holiday movie – all for free with your St. Charles Parish Library card – we have you covered,” she said.
