Parish begins $2.7 million asphalt maintenance program

Crews begin asphalt maintenance on Gassen Street Tuesday, May 28 as part of a $2.7 million project to improve 39 parish-owned roads. The parish council approved the project on April 7 this year.

On Tuesday, May 28, the parish began asphalt road maintenance for 39 parish-owned roads.

The project will cost over $2.7 million and will improve roads on the West Bank and the East Bank. The parish council approved the project at a council meeting on April 7.

The contractor for the project is Barriere Construction.

Carlie Dalgo, a spokesperson for public works, said the roads for the project were chosen based on a third-party assessment of all parish owned roads. The project will resurface roads rated “poor” or “very poor” in that assessment except for roads that have improvements scheduled outside of this project.

In a press release, Parish President Matthew Jewell said his administration adopted a system for professionally grading the condition of the parish’s asphalt streets four years ago. This approach, he said, allows the parish to target the streets most in need of repair, regardless of location.

Dalgo said the parish will communicate road closures to residents through social media and through email. The parish’s website also updates road closures daily.
