Husband and wife entrepreneurs Michael Hernandez Sr. and Tara Hernandez recently announced the opening of their new snowball and ice cream shop, Pop’s Sugar Shack, located at 12439 US-90 in Luling.
The couple’s new shop, located next to Pizza Hut, promises a wide variety of snowball flavors along with a few specialty flavors, along with scooped ice cream, floats, shakes, homemade chili, nachos and other snack-related items. The decision to open their new shop came about after getting feedback from friends in the local area.
“I’ve always loved snowballs…and my grandkids love that I’ve always owned my own snowball machine,” Hernandez Sr. said. “We received encouragement from friends to open an ice cream shop, so my wife and I decided to take the leap of faith and combine the two.”
An experienced business owner, Hernandez Sr. has previously owned or co-owned other hospitality-geared businesses in St. Charles Parish for the last 12 years.
As a grandfather, Hernandez Sr., now 51, says he came up with the name of his business based on the nickname his grandchildren gave him.
“We have seven grandkids, so it felt right to call the place Pop’s,” Hernandez Sr. said of his new store.
Pop’s Sugar Shack’s current operating hours are Monday thru Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., later hours on Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and hours of 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays. The new shop includes dine-in and take-out options, and features seating for 20 guests, a chalk wall to entertain kids along with free Wi-Fi service.
The store recently held its soft opening, which the new owners felt went over well with new customers.
“The soft opening was amazing; we were overwhelmed with the response we received,” Hernandez Sr. said following the store’s official opening this past week. “Thus far, we have received tremendous support from the locals and are looking forward to continuing to serve top notch treats to our neighbors.”
