‘Trash Bash’ kicks off monthly recycling events

RECYCLING INFORMATION
St. Charles Parish residents will be able to turn in recyclable materials during monthly drop-off events through the end of 2009.

The events will kick off during the parish-sponsored Trash Bash cleanup and recycling day from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 14 at the Spillway Boat Launch in Norco. Thereafter, the drop-offs will take place the first Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon at St. Charles Plaza on Hwy. 90 in Luling and the Allen Arterbury Building on River Road in New Sarpy. Recycling is free to the public in conjunction with the Recycling Foundation of Baton Rouge.

Please note that July’s drop-off will be held on July 11 due to the Independence Day holiday.

Materials accepted include plastic containers (numbers 1-7), paper, cardboard, paperboard, shredded paper (in bags), newspapers, magazines, phone books and metal containers such as aluminum and steel. Glass is not accepted.

Those interested in bringing materials to the drop-off events should make sure bags, boxes and other enclosures are easy to handle. Drop-offs are typically done in drive-through fashion, with volunteers unloading recyclables directly from vehicles.

Parish officials are also taking steps to poll residents on the possibility of re-starting curbside recycling pickups. A recycling survey will soon be available in residents’ water bills and online at www.stcharlesparish-la.gov.

A curbside program previously began in St. Charles Parish on March 1, 1994. Katrina took recycling plants in Eastern New Orleans offline, which subsequently halted curbside pickup.

CENSUS BUREAU SEEKING WORKERS, PARTICIPATION
In 2010, the U.S. Census Bureau will issue a call to action for every resident of our nation: “Be Counted.”
To that end, St. Charles Parish is in the process of putting together a Complete Count Committee to ensure each and every person is represented in the upcoming census.

The Census is important because it determines the distribution of nearly $300 billion annually of government funding for critical community services. The census also determines U.S. Congressional seats, which can shift power tables in Washington.

While the new shorter Census questionnaires won’t be mailed until March 2010, the Census Bureau is already gearing up for the event by filling vacant job positions with a salary range of $8 to $19 per hour. Applicants must be 18 years or older, and bilingual speakers are encouraged to apply.
To schedule the Field Employee Selection Aid Test, call 1-866-861-2010 or visit www.census.gov/rodal/www/emply.html.
