There’s important business ahead for Jindal

Now that Gov. Bobby Jindal has gotten that legislative pay raise off his back by vetoing the measure, he needs to get back to the most important business facing the state. And that is preservation and restoration of the coast.

Of course, schools and health care are important, too, but if we have no land to live on here, they don’t matter. We must work to guarantee a solid base for living and then plan for a better infrastructure.

It looked like the governor was headed in the right direction right after his term started when his staff began seeking a unified plan with federal agencies on the projects needed to restore the coast. One of the problems in the past has been that state and federal agencies have not been working together. Also, monthly meetings were scheduled to make any adjustments in the overall plans that were deemed necessary.

We look forward to the state continuing its efforts to get the preservation and restoration well underway before the point of no return arrives  within the next 10 years. And our governor needs to be in the forefront of that effort.

Have a happy and meaningful Fourth of July

This weekend we celebrate the issuance of one of the greatest documents in the history of the world. The Declaration of Independence set the stage for the march to freedom of people in this country which soon spread to other nations.

We now take that freedom for granted. We go out and enjoy the barbecue. We shoot fireworks and revel in the excitement they generate. But we don’t give very much thought as to why we are celebrating.

It’s a joyous occasion, to say the least, but,  to our forefathers, it was a serious one. If our forefathers had not been serious in their intent, perhaps we would not be celebrating.

Have a happy and thoughtful Fourth of July.
