There’ll be plenty going on in next few weeks

Coming up will be the busiest few weeks of recent history in St. Charles Parish and the State of Louisiana.

During them, we will end one of the calmest hurricane seasons in memory, thank goodness, and celebrate Christmas and the New Year.

LSU will play for the Southeastern Conference championship and a long-shot chance for the national championship. The Saints will shoot for a wild card slot in the NFL championship race.

Whoever wins, New Orleans will become the scene of a lot of sports action early next year. The Sugar Bowl will match two of the top teams in the nation, the national college football championship will be decided and the National Basketball Association all-star game will be played in the Superdome.

Then comes the real excitement. Louisiana’s new government will take over with the inauguration of Gov. Bobby Jindal and other statewide officers and legislators. And a completely new administration and parish council will take over in St. Charles Parish.

Our new governor plans to call a special legislative session right away to bring a new look to ethics in our governmental structure. Whew!

If that’s not enough, Mardi Gras comes early on February 5. And the two weeks before will be back to normal pre-Katrina times when the carnival season dominated our social activities.

So get ready for some real fun and excitement – – and serious times ahead. There has never been quite a beginning for a new year in Louisiana.

It should be very important to the future of our state – – and fun besides.
