‘Rabies Run’ perfect time for pet vaccination

By Renee Simpson

According to the St. Charles Parish Code of Ordinances, a licensed veterinarian must vaccinate all dogs and cats against rabies on a yearly basis.

Pet owners can meet that requirement by attending to 2011 Rabies Run, taking place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. April 3 at both the East and West Bank Bridge Parks.

Vaccinations will be available for $10, and microchips will be available for $20 while supplies last. The animal shelter will also run a food drive for patrons, who can receive a free bag of dog or cat food while supplies last at the site of the old Winn-Dixie on Paul Maillard Road by showing proof of vaccination.

The event is sponsored by the St. Charles Humane Society in cooperation with St. Charles Animal Control and Destrehan Animal Hospital.

Join clean team for Trash Bash
March 26 will mark the fifth Trash Bash Great American Cleanup event in three years in St. Charles Parish. Over that period, thanks to the hard work of citizen and business volunteers, over 17,000 pounds of trash have been cleaned from roadways. That’s over 93 miles of area beautified.

It’s a small commitment of time that can make a huge impact. All cleaning supplies are available for volunteers, who will work from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. that day. To celebrate our efforts, there’ll be a celebration afterwards at the West Bank Bridge Park beginning at 11:30 a.m.

So far, Valero St. Charles Refinery has signed on to cook hamburgers, and SDT Waste and Debris Services LLC will provide jambalaya. ES&H will do smoked sausage, and we’ll hear music from Norco’s Oldies but Goodies. There’ll also be games, goodies, giveaways and educational booths by Harry Hurst’s Wetland Watchers group.

Keep Louisiana Beautiful has provided a $5,000 grant to help fund this year’s Spring Trash Bash.
