A resident who lives in the 400 block of Perryl Lane in Mimosa Park startled a would-be burglar who was trying to break in to his home this morning.
According to St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne, the attempted burglary occurred at 8:30 a.m. this morning at the apartment complex near Birch and Wanda streets in Mimosa Park.
The homeowner heard glass break on his rear door and caught a black male trying to enter his home. The burglar told the man that he worked for the “Jefferson sewer and water board” and had accidentally broken the window while checking the water meter, Champagne said.
He quickly changed his story to say that he was with the St. Charles sewer and water board, Champagne added. The suspect was wearing a green construction safety vest.
The resident told the man that he was going to call 911 and the suspect fled. It appears that the suspect used a pair of pliers left on top of a barbecue pit to break the window.
“The homeowner also noticed a second black male just to the east of the apartment complex that he believes was with the first suspect,” Champagne said. “The second suspect also fled on foot.”
Champagne said the primary suspect was beteen 25 to 30 years old. He was around five-foot-10. Champange said his office has investigated similar crimes in the past where thieves wore safety vests to avoid suspicion while going into and out of yards.
“We also beleive that this was a crime of opportunity by transient criminals since they were not even aware they were not in Jefferson Parish,” Champagne said.
