Father shoots son after latter pulled gun in argument, police say

A father fatally shot his son after the latter arrived heavily armed at the St. Rose home of his parents, according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.

A 21-year-old Clayton Poche was wearing a bulletproof vest and armed with a semi-automatic handgun when, the Sheriff’s Office said, he began arguing with his mother.

Poche’s father, 48-year-old Ben Poche, returned home in the midst of the argument and the situation escalated when detectives believe Clayton Poche drew his handgun. That prompted Ben Poche to fire his own weapon.

According to police, Clayton Poche had a history of mental illness, including unstable and violent behavior, and had received strong psychiatric care.

Police responded to a call prompted by the incident at approximately 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. The shooting occurred in the 200 block of Dianne Drive.

Detectives have confirmed the incident was domestic and not related to a separate shooting that occurred Monday on Turtlecreek Lane in St. Rose. That incident is still under investigation.

  1. My poor cousin and his family. They were the best parents you’d ever meet. We are devestated and praying for all involved. Thank God no one else was hurt and may Clayton find peace at last. God bless you and your family, Benji. I love you all.
