Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection show us how to win by losing.
In the letter to the Philippines Paul says, Jesus “emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. Being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross. Therefore, God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name.” (Phil. 2:7-9)
Jesus became human to teach us how to empty ourselves of our pride and hate and to take the form of a servant like Jesus did. When we die to self, we find new life. This is what Jesus’ resurrection means for us. The following quotations show us how to be good servants of Jesus.
Author Og Mandino once said, “Extend to each person, no matter how trivial the contact, all the care and kindness and understanding and love you can muster, and do it with no thought of any reward. Your life will never be the same.”
Coach Dale Brown declares, “Kindness sees no color, ethnicity, age, gender, status wealth or religion. However, it does see the person of God. Kindness is a language the deaf can hear and the blind can see. With one small loving gesture you can change a person’s life for the better.”
The late Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Returning hate for hate multiples hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate multiples hate; violence multiplies violence in a descending spiral of destruction.
“Time is cluttered with the wreckage of communities that surrender to hatred and violence. For the salvation of our nation and the salvation of humanity, we must follow another way. Love is the most durable power in the world. This creative force is the most potent instrument available in mankind’s quest for peace and security.”
President John F. Kennedy had written a speech he had planned to give in Dallas on 11-22-63, the day he was assassinated. This is an excerpt from that speech. “Our duty as a party is not to our party alone, but to the nation, and to all humanity. Our duty is not merely the preservation of political power but the preservation of peace and freedom. So let us not be petty when our cause is so great. Let us not quarrel among ourselves when our nation’s future is at stake.
“Let us stand together with renewed confidence in our cause and determined that this land we love will lead all humans into new frontiers of peace and abundance.”
Basketball coach John Wooden identifies what important in life: “Happiness begins where selfishness ends and one engages in acts of kindness.”
The following are Six Little Stories: 1) One day all villagers decided to pray for rain. On the day of prayer, all the people gathered, but only one boy came with an umbrella. That’s FAITH.
2) When you throw babies in the air, they laugh because they know you will catch them. That’s TRUST.
3) Every night we go to bed without any assurance of being alive the next morning, but still, we set the alarms to wake up. That’s HOPE.
4) We plan big things for tomorrow in spite of zero knowledge of the future. That’s CONFIDENCE.
5) We see the world suffering, but still, we get married and have children That’s LOVE.
6) On an old man’s shirt was written a sentence, “I am not 80 years old; I am sweet 16 with 64 years of experience.” That’s ATTITUDE.
