St. Charles Parish will be alive with parties Tuesday when the National Night Out Against Crime is observed. It is an occasion that benefits us in many ways – getting to know one another in our neighborhoods and understanding how we can stand together to make our areas safer.
Fighting crime is not just a duty of the Sheriff’s Office. It should be for all of us to pay attention to any evidence of law violations day and night that could endanger the safety of our neighborhoods.
That is the intention of the Night Out Against Crime. Sheriff’s deputies will be present to give us support in our efforts by answering questions and sharing opinions on how we can all participate in providing some of the detective work they need.
So go out and have a good time Tuesday night. And help make your neighborhood safer.
Grand Ridge is gaining ground
It happened almost 40 years ago when some residents were hunting in the forested wetlands south of U. S. 90. “This is a beautiful area,” said one of them. “We should build a golf course here.”
And they did. It became Willowdale Country Club and Golf Course.
But in recent years, like many other golf courses in southeast Louisiana and other areas, it experienced hard times. Last year, Willowdale was closed but, soon after, a new organization was formed to buy it.
The course was re-opened this past summer as Grand Ridge Golf Club and the fairways and greens are in good condition. Gardens have been planted in many areas so golfers and others who are allowed to roam the course at certain times can enjoy this beautiful area of St. Charles Parish.
Its membership, which started from scratch, has been growing and its finances have been stable. With less humid weather ahead, it should become even more inviting to enjoy the natural beauty of Grand Ridge.
The course is open to members and green fee players. Golf carts are included in the price of playing.
Jindal could be what country needs
Maybe Gov. Bobby Jindal isn’t quite ready to go after the Presidency yet but he sure has some good talking points when he is. The benefits he has brought to the state seem to be just what Washington needs.
Look at these points, brought out by Jindal in a talk to the Northshore Legislative Alliance at a luncheon in St. Tammany Parish, according to an article by Bob Warren in The Times Picayune::
• Louisiana is now spending some $9 billion less per year than before Jindal took office in 2008.
• The state now employs fewer people than it did 20 years ago.
• And while the nation’s credit rating has been downgraded, Louisiana’s credit rating is the best it has been in 20 years.
He has the record to show that the state can cut corners and still produce a growing economy. The unemployment rate here is among the lowest in the nation.
If our governor can continue to produce figures such as those above, he could have a very good chance of getting the calling he wants in Washington. But for the time being, let’s let him keep doing it in Louisiana.
