Fight back against cancer at relay

LULING – After many celebratory parties leading up to the main event, the 2011 Relay for Life is finally here.

The overnight event will be held at the West Bank Bridge Park from April 16 at 3 p.m. to April 17 at 6 a.m. Thirty-two teams have already signed up to participate, but it is not too late to get involved.

At Relay, teams of people camp out and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event because cancer never sleeps.

Audrey Raziano, chairperson of the event, said that Relay is a great way for people to honor those who have survived cancer, remember those who lost their battle to cancer and fight for those who are still fighting.

This year’s theme is “Relay goes around the world” and the campsites around the tracks will each reflect a different country. Raziano said that the public is welcome to come participate in the cause by buying refreshments from the campsites and enjoying the entertainment, which includes a performance by the “Village People,” performed by a group from the Sheriff’s Office around 10 p.m. Saturday.

“It’s going to be pretty awesome,” she said.
