Wildcats wrap up season at Barbe, fall 10-4 in 1st round

Destrehan’s softball season came to an end on the road at the hands of a hot-hitting Barbe team Tuesday, the Wildcats falling 10-4 in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs. The Wildcats rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to take a 4-3 lead in the third inning, but Barbe wouldn’t allow another run for the rest of the day.

Barbe hit three home runs in the game.

“We knew they could swing the sticks,” said Destrehan coach Kenny Montz. “They put pressure on us all day, in every inning. We knew we’d have to score some runs to win this one, and we felt we could do that. They kept making plays. We hit some balls hard, but right at them.”

Lainnie Dugas went 1-for-4 with three RBIs for Destrehan, including a three-run home run in the third inning that tied the game. Sarah Boquet doubled in the game. Krista Robles took the loss on the mound for DHS (19-9).

The Wildcats will lose two of their most productive players next season in pitcher Krista Robles and shortstop Taylor Lucich, but the rest of the lineup returns.

“We’re excited about what we’ll have back next year,” Montz said. “When you look back, we had seven or eight starters returning this year, but we had a group of freshmen who pushed their way into the lineup. We’re looking forward to seeing how they develop.”

At the same time, he acknowledged that filling the shoes of Robles and Lucich wouldn’t be easy.

“Those two have been rocks for our program,” Montz said. “They’ve been the consummate leaders.

“I always say, you’re only as good as your senior leadership dictates. They were great in that regard. Hopefully someone will step up and fill that role.”
