The Destrehan Fighting Wildcats suffered a few bumps and bruises in their schedule last week but rallied on Tuesday to give the team a positive outlook for the remainder of this week.
The Fighting Wildcats took down Lutcher High School 3-0 on the road Tuesday evening. Destrehan junior Cole Martin allowed only one hit, no earned runs, walked two and struck out five in four innings.
Junior Brandon Wild hit a two run single that put Destrehan up in the first inning 2-0, and senior Brennan Breaud scored on a hard ground ball to left field off the bat of senior Louis Kieffer.
Before their win over Lutcher, the Wildcats struggled against Brother Martin, Rummel and Jesuit while beating Shaw.
Destrehan began the week with a 4-3 loss to Brother Martin, despite an impressive performance from Martin. Martin went 5 2/3 innings striking out eight, walking three and allowing no earned runs.
Brother Martin scored first in the bottom of the third inning and stretched their lead to 2-0 in the fifth. Destrehan got on the board in the top of the sixth inning when they scored three runs, taking the lead for the first time in the game.
However, in the bottom of the sixth Brother Martin brought a man across the plate with a drive to left field tying it up 3-3. Brother Martin put the game away with a solo run in the seventh.
On Saturday, the Fighting Wildcats turned their luck around with a couple of “wild” scores and some help from pitcher Logan Babin. Babin threw 52 strikes out of 71 pitches in six innings, allowing only six hits and one walk while recording four strike outs in Destrehan’s 2-0 shutout of Archbishop Shaw.
Connor Caminita hit a sacrifice fly off Shaw’s Adrian Ferrell in the top of the fourth inning to score Brandon Wild. And in the top of the sixth inning Wild scored for the second time on the day off a passed ball.
Game two on Saturday saw the Wildcats lose their late-inning lead and drop the two team swat-fest 20-17 to Archbishop Rummel High School. The first inning was all Destrehan as Wild hit a line drive to left field that scored Kohen Granier.
Later in the inning, with three men on base and one out, Nathan Pilutti hit a line drive, grand slam dinger over the center field fence to score Logan Krajcer, Brennan Breaud and Jared Montz.
Destrehan led 5-0 after one half inning of play, but Rummel scored two runs in the second and stayed in it by scoring three runs in the third, six runs in the fourth and six runs in the sixth. Destrehan scored four runs in the second, one run in the third, two runs in the fifth and another two runs in the sixth inning.
The lead changed five times in the later innings, but Rummel took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth. Rummel added another five runs before the end of the inning, going up 20-14. Despite a last inning rally by Destrehan, who scored another three runs, it would not be enough to claim victory.
Sunday saw the Fighting Wildcats suffer a 10-0 shutout loss to Jesuit High School.
