Volunteers: 4-H Club seeks shooting sports volunteering

Area 4-H programs are presently seeking adult volunteers age 21 years and older to assist with their Outdoor Skills Shooting Sports programs. The Shooting Sports program, which is supervised through the Parish 4-H Club programs, was developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation.

The objectives of the Shooting Sports program are to encourage participation in natural resources and related natural science programs through shooting, hunting and related activities and to teach safe and responsible use of firearms and archery equipment.

Participants will also enhance the development of self-concept, character and personal growth, learn about related careers and strengthen family relationships. The disciplines involved in the Shooting Sports program includes: Air Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, Archery, Black Powder, BB Gun and Photography.

Training will be offered at 4-H Camp in Alexandria on Sept. 8 to 9 and in Franklinton on Sept. 21 to 22. Volunteers may attend either or both trainings.

In order for a Parish to offer any discipline of the Shooting Sports program, they must have Volunteers from the Parish trained in the discipline.

Volunteers assist the 4-H agents by scheduling and conducting workshops, assisting and supervising at shooting competitions and by helping to solicit more volunteers for the program.

Some parishes may have funds available to assist volunteers with travel expenses.

Anyone interested in becoming a 4-H Shooting Sports volunteer should contact David Pichon in St. Charles at 985-785-4473 or you can e-mail him at: dpichon@agctr.lsu.edu. The 4-H agents will be happy to meet with you to discuss your possible involvement in the 4-H Shooting Sports program.

The registration deadline for the training in Franklinton is Monday, Sept. 17.
