Hahnville looks to finish regular season strong

Trista Naquin of Hahnville

At 10-9, Hahnville’s been a bit more up-and-down than head coach Mendi LeBoeuf would like this season, but the team’s district win over H.L. Bourgeois Tuesday was a performance she said represented a strong step in the right direction.

Hahnville (10-9, 4-2) swept the Braves, 25-15, 25-20, 25-13, led by Trista Naquin’s 13 kills. Colby Mayeux notched seven kills while Sandy Bourgeois served four aces in the win.

“We were really active and consistent defensively, something we’ve really been working at in practice,” said LeBoeuf. “I think since the Destrehan game we’ve been a bit inconsistent. We’ve played hard, that hasn’t been a problem. We haven’t quite executed as well as we need to – sometimes it’s very good and sometimes less than.

“Tonight, though, I thought we played a complete match. I’m really pleased with the way we played.”

It was a strong win that stopped a brief losing spell, with back-to-back losses against strong opponents last week in Terrebonne and Chapelle. The latter was a non-District 6-I battle; the former the Tigers’ second loss to a Terrebonne team unbeaten in district play, with Hahnville remaining in second place.

“It was good to see us bounce back,” LeBoeuf said.

Hahnville entered the weekend ranked 21st in Division I power points, which would mean a road game in round one were the team to finish in that range.  The Tigers return to action Tuesday, wrapping up district play against district foe Central Lafourche.

“Any ground you can make up helps your percentages and where you stack up in round one,” LeBoeuf said. “And you never know. We’re gonna go out there and work, and see if we can’t push ourselves up a little bit.”

Naquin’s 13 kills on Tuesday represented the continuation of a very strong season. The team’s hitting leader has set the example both on and off the court for her team.

“She’s consistently hitting in the 300s … she’s really having a great season,” said LeBoeuf. “She keeps a next point mentality and really does a great job leading us. I think she was great last year and matured a little bit from that. She’s huge for us.”
