The Bite is ON!

Cataouche fishing isn’t backing down. On Sunday, part-time fishing guide Michael Becnel took friends Lauren Lemmon (top) and Adam Lorio fishing on Lake Cataouche to catch these slab-sized crappie. “I’ve never seen action like this — ever!” said Becnel who lives in Luling and works for Dow Chemical. Becnel has fished the St. Charles Parish lake all his life but has never caught fish like this in the brackish-water lake.

Becnel said the crappie bit on a black/chartreuse 1/32 oz. jig fished under a cork. “The fish were grouped up. We were the only boat catching fish in that spot.”

His technique? I troll until I catch one or two, then I drop the anchor pole right away.”

Crappie isn’t the only thing Becnel is catching in record numbers on Cataouche. He’s also caught redfish and black drum on beetlespins while fishing for perch and — speaking of perch, “We missed the largest lakerunner I’ve ever seen.”
