Success of Bassmaster Classic brings fishermen to St. Charles waterways

Lake Cataouatche has become a household name across the bass nation federation after the Bassmaster Classic.

“We have had 14 million hits on our Web site during the tournament,” Steve Bowman, a Bassmaster Classic marshal, said. “Bass fishermen across the country monitored the progress of the bass tournament minute-by-minute and day-to-day very closely.”

Since the close of the Bassmaster Classic on Feb. 20, bass fishermen from across the south have headed out to Pier 90 to try their luck in Lake Cataouatche.

“We have had bass fishermen arriving at 5 a.m. to head out the next morning. Within the past 10 days business has been extremely good,” Pier 90’s harbor master said. “Last weekend was the best weekend we have had in the past year. License plates from Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas and Texas have shown up.”

Susan Vernor went out to Lake Cataouatche near Whiskey Bay and caught a nice bass on a black Mister Twister with a pink fire tail.

“We caught a lot but I just like to fish,” she said.

For local fishermen, Lake Des Allemands, Bayou Des Allemands, the Salvador Management Area and Lake Cataouatche have been excellent for bass, sac-a-lait, bream and catfish.

In Lake Des Allemands, the Providence Canal, Humble in the Lake Canals and Knight Bay  have produced fish. In Bayou Des Allemands, Humble in the Bayou, Penrod, and the Airplane Canal have been the best locations.

In the Salvador Management Area, Four Corners, the Mecom Canal, the North Canal, Alligator Pond, The Fence, and the “L” Canal are top spots.

Catfish are still biting along the cuts  in Lake Cataouatche. Find clear water on a calm day and fish the surrounding points and canals in the lake.

The boats along the bulkheads in the Tank Ponds are an indication where Kevin VanDam fished during the tournament.

For sac-a-lait use blue/white,black/chartreuse,red/white/chartreuse/ and black/white mini jigs. Shiners and the Berkley Crappie nibble in yellow have worked very good as well.

Bass are being caught on any dark colored plastic worm, June Bug, Watermelon Baby Brush Hogs and Black Ruby. White spinner baits with gold blade along with any pearl to chartreuse colored crank baits have been successful.

Catfish are still hitting earthworms, chicken livers, and gizzards. Some bream are starting to show up and are being caught on mini jigs.
