St. Charles Shootout

Hahnville’s Lady Tigers basketball team takes first place in regional tournament

The Hahnville High School girls basketball team slam dunked 13 competitors in the 2007 St. Charles Shootout tournament and snagged the championship title with a 44-42 win over Ellender Memorial. The tournament, which took place on Dec. 13 through 15, was one that started with six head-to-head games and ended with Hahnville and Ellender in an overtime race for the championship.

St. Charles Shootout was started three years ago, but this year’s game was by far the best yet,” said head coach Kevin Robicheaux.

In addition to being satisfied with his player’s performance on the court, Robicheaux says that credit should be given where credit is due and that Hahnville’s win wasn’t made possible by just one player, but by the team as a whole.

“I don’t feel that we have any ‘star players’ on our team, said Robicheaux. “In other words, if the competition tries to shut down one of our players, someone else steps up. It’s a team effort.”

Hahnville guard Nadia Cox scored 19 points in the championship game against Ellender and held her opponent’s two top scorers back, but it was Missy Scrubbs who made the go-ahead basket that won the game in overtime.

“Holding back the top two players in the state was the highlight of the game,” said Robicheaux. “Even though we had some tight-man defense on them for most of the game, it was a total team effort.”

Hahnville is 14-4 for the season and has 13 games remaining with district play beginning on Jan. 8, 2008 when the Lady Tigers host East St. John at home.

St. Charles Shootout competitors: Ellender, Assumption, Dominican, South Lafourche, O.P. Walker, Mount Carmel, John Curtis, Thibodaux, Chapelle, Xavier Prep, Bonnabel, Destrehan and Hahnville.
