Shell Motiva fends off late Shaw rally for 7-6 win

Bendetto has 3 RBIs, Granier picks up save

Destrehan-based Shell Motiva built up a huge lead over Shaw-based Refuel on Monday, but had to fend off a late rally in order to pull out a 7-6 victory in American Legion action.

Shell Motiva struck first in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly by Brock Benedetto. Later in the inning, Brennan Breaud blasted a ground ball up the middle to score Austin McDonald and put Shell Motiva up 2-0.

In the third, Shell Motiva extended their lead to 5-0. Benedetto singled in two of those runs and came in to score later in the frame after a Refuel error.

In the fourth, Sam Steib put Shell Motiva up 7-0 on a two-RBI single and it looked like the Destrehan squad was on their way to a blowout win. However, Refuel would answer in the fifth.

Shaw outfielder Cody Schouest got his team on the board with a single to left and Kyle Flettrich blasted a double to make the score 7-3.

In the sixth, Refuel creeped even closer due to three errors by Destrehan to close the gap to 7-6, but Shell Motiva ace Kade Granier came on in relief in the seventh and kept Refuel off the board to pick up the save.

Benedetto led Shell Motiva from the plate, going 1-for-2 with three RBIs. Steib was a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBIs, while Breaud went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Logan Babin picked up the win, striking out four and giving up only two hits in 4 and 2/3rds innings.
