The Bayou Region All-Stars defeated the River Region All-Stars 17-13 in the 10th annual HTV-Lions Club High School All-Star Classic Friday night at John L. Guidry Stadium in Thibodaux.
It was the first time the Bayou squad has won the game in the current format since 2006.
The Bayou All-Stars were paced by a heavy-duty running attack which accounted for 248 yards rushing between five different runners.
Terrebonne High School halfback Dominique Matthews was named the Bayou MVP after rushing for 58 yards on 11 carries and he also returned two kickoffs for 83 yards.
“There are some very talented young men on the River Region squad, but we showed tonight that we have a few pretty good players on the bayou also,” said Bayou Region All-Star head coach Danny Carroll. “We run the ball a lot more here on the bayou. When it comes right down to it, we are going to try and pound the ball, and we were successful in doing so tonight. In these type all-star games you try and maximize the talent on hand and I think our coaching staff did a superb job getting the most out of the young men. It means a lot to defeat such a great group of players like we saw tonight from the River Region.”
Destrehan High School standout running back Henry Lenox rushed for 87 yards on six carries. The speedy Lenox scored on a 59-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter.
Lenox was named the River Region Co-MVP for the game sharing the honor with Lutcher High School quarterback Gavin Webster.
Another player who was given high praise for his play in the all-star game was Destrehan High School defensive tackle Calvin Ursin.
The 5-11, 260 pound defensive tackle seemed to constantly be able to push the inside pocket and he showed excellent range running down backs from the backside.
South Lafourche High School 1st team all-district offensive tackle Rafe Plaisance said he was very impressed with Ursin.
“#63 (Calvin) Ursin is something special. For a big man he can run the field and he has excellent instincts in figuring out what is breaking down out on the field. I can see why everyone was talking so highly about him.”
