Lunker bass looking for food, Sacalait party after dark in Paradis
Time is running out for deer and duck hunters. In area 6, our area, with a firearm, the season will remain open until Jan. 18.
Primitive arms will continue from Jan. 19 through Jan. 25. We are in the West Zone for ducks. The season will close Jan. 18.
As a deer and duck hunter, this means fellow hunters and I have only three weeks left to our seasons. Be prepared hunters, the seasons are quickly coming to a close.
Freshwater fishing
Since Christmas, the Davis Pond Diversion has been running water at a minimum.
This means the water entering Lake Cataouatche form the northern side has been low.
On Dec. 29. the Army Corp. of Engineers opened the Diversion and the water has been flowing at 2,600 cubic feet per second.
A lot of big bass have been caught at the cuts along the north side of Lake Cataouatche.
Best lures have been the Baby Brushhog in the watermelon with red metal flake. The white spinner bait and the Baby Minus-1 in white and chartreuse.
The bulkhead before the Tank Ponds and the Netherlands is holding plenty of big bass.
If the wind is pushing water through the cuts of the bulkheads, fish the middle of the cuts.
The mouth of the Louisiana Cypress Canal along the grass beds has been the hottest spot in the area for bass.
Sac-a-lait are schooling in Paradis along Highway 90 at the pumps – especially active after dark.
Wait until the sun goes down and start fishing. Blue/white, black/chartreuse, and shiners have worked the best.
Salt water fishing
Last Saturday, John Hiene, Paul Blickley and Andrew Callais fished the Pen Area.
They caught a limit of speckle trout, nine redfish, and a 27-inch black drum.
The specs were hitting the salt-n-pepper terror tail, the purple and white, the chartreuse beetle, and black and white tuxedo.
Under a cork proved the only sure method to catching specks.
The redfish and drum were caught in the Riggolets and the Texaco Canal with market shrimp and a jig head on the bottom.
