If you think you have what it takes to compete amongst a wide variety of amateur baseball players then the Southeast chapter of the National American Baseball Association wants you to show them your best stuff at tryouts on July 22.
While the NABA boasts more than 50,000 recreational players in 39 states, the league is new to Louisiana, so new in fact that president of the Southeast Louisiana Baseball League of the NABA Aaron Guidry is still trying to finalize a venue to host tryouts at next month.
Hoping to start playing in August with at least six different teams of 10 people, Guidry said there has been quite a mix of old and young that have shown interest in the fledgling recreational league.
“We have quite a good mix of athletes who are interested, Guidry told the Herald-Guide. “Some guys have played college ball, some haven’t played since little league.”
And while the age limit for joining is 18, Guidry had a 58 year-old man show up to the informational meeting the league held in Destrehan.
“He’s 58 and he wants to play ball,” Guidry said. “So we’ve got quite a bit of difference in the age gap right now too.”
The league plays a traditional nine-inning game from August until the season ends in December with a three-hour cutoff on each game to keep the lengths of the game approximate, Guidry said.
So far, he said he’s had enough interest to get the league going, but he’s still trying to thicken the athletic ranks.
“We would like to start with six teams but right it looks like we have enough for four,” he said. “Right now we’re still trying to recruit players.”
