Mathews leads Destrehan past Terrebonne, 42-17

Another Friday night, another blowout win for Destrehan.

The Wildcats improved to 4-0 on the year after knocking off Terrebonne 42-17 in their first district game of the season.

Destrehan, led by four touchdowns from running back Will Mathews, scored on their first four possessions of the game. They took an early 7-0 lead after quarterback Donovan Isom marched the Wildcats down the field with passes to Kirk Merritt, John Williams and Michael Smith. Mathews then broke through for a 23-yard touchdown run to put his team on top less than three minutes into the game.

Destrehan struck again a few minutes later when Isom connected with sophomore receiver Tremaine Armstrong on a 44-yard score.

Terrebonne answered with a 40-yard field to cut into the lead 14-3, but Mathews and the Wildcats proved to be too much. Mathews scored his second touchdown of the opening quarter after bowling over defenders on a 27-yard run and then following up with a 3-yard run for the score.

Early in the second quarter, the Wildcats faced a 4th-and-3 from the Terrebonne 21-yard line but Isom found elusive receiver Alfred Smith open in the flat. Smith dodged through two defenders on his way to another Destrehan score.

With the Wildcats up 28-3 in the second, Terrebonne quarterback Colby Stewart scrambled for a 24-yard touchdown run, which gave his team some momentum.

On the next series, Terrebonne forced Destrehan to punt and Stewart marched his team into Wildcat territory. However, his pass near the sideline was picked off by Allen Pittman, who brought it all the way back to the Destrehan 24-yard line.

On the next play, Mathews scored his third touchdown of the night with a great run through the middle of the Terrebonne defense to put the Wildcats up 35-10 heading into the half.

Destrehan’s high-powered offense was kept off the scoreboard in the third, but quickly made up for it to start the fourth. Mathews began the drive with a 33-yard run and Isom followed with a 24-yard run of his own.

Mathews put the finishing touches on Terrebonne with a 7-yard score.
