Louisiana Outdoor Writer’s Association announces youth contest winners

The Louisiana Outdoor Writers Association has announced the winners of its annual Youth Outdoor Journalism Contest.

Each year, LOWA sponsors its Youth Journalism Contest to encourage youth literacy and the wise use of our outdoor resources.

The contest is designed to interest students in writing and photography about any outdoor subject such as hunting, fishing, camping and hiking.

The contest is open to all students 18 years of age and younger. This year 248 students submitted 339 entries from across Louisiana and a few from Mississippi.

There were 72 entries in Senior Essay (14-18 years of age), 95 entries in Junior Essay (13 and under), and 172 entries from 81 students in Photography (18 and under).

The winners of the 2007 contest will be honored at the annual LOWA conference in Shreveport, La. on Aug. 18, 2007. Winners in each category will receive the following prizes: 1st Place-$150 and a certificate, 2nd Place-$100 and a certificate, 3rd Place-$50 and a certificate, Honorable Mention-certificate.

The winners will learn their ranking in each category at the awards ceremony. Any student who cannot attend will receive his/her check and/or certificate by mail after the event.

The winners (in no ranking order) are as follows:

SENIOR ESSAY: Elliot Boudreaux, 15, Episcopal HS, Baton Rouge; Caitlyn Norris, 17, C.E. Byrd HS, Shreveport; Jake Hayden, 16, Dunham School, Baton Rouge; David Henderson, 17, C.E. Byrd HS, Shreveport.

JUNIOR ESSAY: Luke Leblanc, 10, Holy Family School, Addis; Maria LaGrone, 10, Home Schooled, Livonia; Amanda Wolf, 13, Home Schooled, Baton Rouge; Michael Carrigee, 13, Folsom.

PHOTOGRAPHY (Judges selected two Honorable Mentions): Brittany Alane Barbary, 10, Bains Elementary, St. Francisville; Michael Gronowski, 17, St. Amant High School, St. Amant; Gaia Burrage, 12, Boyet Jr. High, Slidell; Robert Gallant, 17, Airline High School, Bossier City; Amy Weaver, 14, Metairie (Winner – 2004, 2005).
