Season ends on sad note for both Hahnville and Destrehan softball teams
The Destrehan and Hahnville baseball teams put their destiny in their own hands last week, by each picking up big wins against district competition.
The Wildcats were impressive in a two-game stretch against St. Amant after splitting area games with Hahnville the previous week.
Destrehan pulled out a 7-2 win in the first contest with St. Amant, and then shut the door for good with a huge 14-2 shellacking.
Those two wins had moved the Wildcats to 5-4 in the district, but the team fell back to .500 with a slim 6-7 loss to East St. John on April 14.
That win was East St. John’s first area win of the year.
However, the Wildcats are still in good standing in their district and are currently in the midst of a three-team tie for second place, at least record wise.
Dutchtown and St. Amant are also 5-5, though the Wildcats have picked up those two wins over St. Amant.
Dutchtown has beaten Destrehan in their only meeting of the year, pulling out an 8-7 victory, but the Wildcats meet Dutchtown in two straight games to end the regular season.
Like Destrehan, Hahnville was also impressive last week, picking up a 9-8 win over East Ascension and a 8-1 victory over Dutchtown. However, East Ascension shut out the Tigers 12-0 in the back end of the doubleheader, though both teams are still tied for first with 7-3 district records.
Hahnville looks likely to grab a playoff spot, however, unless the team falls apart in their last two series against East St. John and St. Amant.
Unlike their male counterparts, the Destrehan Lady Cats failed to pick up a win in their last seven games of the season, finishing with a 1-9 district record and an overall mark of 6-20-1.
The Hahnville Lady Tigers fared better over that stretch, finishing with a 2-2 record in their last four games.
The team suffered defeats to Vanderbilt Catholic and St. Amant, but squeezed in wins against East St. John and Lutcher between those two contest.
The Lady Tigers finished the year with a 4-6 district record and an overall mark of 25-12-1.
