Hahnville’s Lady Tigers warm up for annual tournament

Hahnville High School’s Lady Tigers basketball ball team and the Destrehan High School Lady Wildcats are suiting up for one of the season’s biggest competitions – the annual Rumble on the River at the Alario Center in Westwego on Dec. 27 through Dec. 30.

And Hahnville’s head basketball coach says that this year’s event will be a huge competition for Lady Tigers basketball.

“The gold divison of the tournament will feature some very good teams from Mississippi and Alabama, a nationally ranked team from Lafayette and two state championship teams from last year” said Kevin Robicheaux. “Usually  all the teams in the gold division go on to win their district and continue deep into the playoffs.”

But it doesn’t end there, Robicheaux also says that there is a particular skill set required for his girls to be successful on the court.

“A player needs quickness and confidence,” said Robicheaux.

“If you are quicker than your opponent then you have an advantage before the ball gets tossed up and players who know they can play the game usually have no problem coming through when the game is on the line.”

Robiceaux says that his team plays well on the court mostly because it is made up of seniors, but also because they are unselfish.

“This team rarely passes up the opportunity to help each other out,” said Robicheaux. “Whether it’s helping a teammate up when they get knocked down, or passing up a good shot to get a better shot, they want to see the team succeed over any individual accomplishments.”

But not every team is perfect and Robicheaux admits that his team does have weaknesses that effects their performance on the court.

“Our team needs more work on being mentally focused before a game,” said Robicheaux. “Sometimes we tend to to lose focus before a game which usually means we aren’t ready at the start which gives the other team the chance to take the lead.

“In the losses we have had so far this year, out opponents got out early leads and we had to spend a lot of energy just to get back in,” said Robicheaux.

The Lady Tigers beat Ellender Memorial 44-42 in the St. Charles Shootout which was held on Dec. 13.
