Destrehan girls stay unbeaten with win over Lady Tigers

Hahnville hasn’t forgotten its lopsided loss to archrival Destrehan on Jan. 3, and on Friday night, the Tigers earned a measure of payback.

The Tigers earned a 76-71 victory at the R.K. Smith Middle School gymnasium, halting an eight-game losing streak in what was a back-and-forth battle between the two rivals.

Raylon Hardy scored 18 to lead Hahnville. Terrell Jefferson scored 17 and Dylan Lorio scored 16.

“It was just a signature win for us,” Hardy said. “This was our rival, and we needed to get over the hump. We needed to show we’re a better team than what we’ve been showing and that we could close a game out.”

Lucky Maxon scored 21 to lead Destrehan (9-15, 2-5). Freddie Brown scored 15, while J.R. Blood and Jalvin Michael scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Hahnville (9-19, 1-6) led 32-24 at halftime, but Destrehan made a big push to eventually take the a 49-48 lead on a Freddie Brown basket. Hahnville responded with a deep 3 from Jefferson, with 1:41 left in the third, leading to an intense battle for the near 10 minutes of game time remaining.

Back to back threes by Lorio early in the fourth quarter stabilized another Hahnville lead. Destrehan pulled within one at 60-59, but back to back baskets by Lorio and Jefferson made it a 5-point HHS lead. From there, Destrehan got no closer than three.

“I told our team we could finish, that we were gonna win this game, no matter what,” Hardy said. “We’ve got guys on the team who made big shots down the stretch and they pulled us through.”

DESTREHAN LADYCATS 78, HAHNVILLE LADY TIGERS 47 — Destrehan broke into the MaxPreps National Top 25 ranking this week, and the undefeated Wildcats continued to take care of business in district play Friday, moving to 26-0 with a win over Hahnville.

Cara Ursin scored 29 to lead Destrehan. Jerlicia Morris and Korrianna Reynaud each scored 15. Brandi Morris added eight.
