Hahnville defense comes up big in defeat of East St. John

Two of Hahnville’s six touchdowns came from the defense, leading the Tigers to a 42-26 win over the East St. John Wildcats Friday (Oct. 17) night.

Hahnville did not take the lead until the third quarter when Jai Knight returned an interception 26 yards for the touchdown to put the Tigers up 28-26. It was, however, only a cap to the defense’s overall containment of the Wildcats’ dual-threat, LSU-bound quarterback Xavier Lewis on that drive.

The Wildcats dominated the first quarter, opening the game with back-to-back touchdowns, but were one-for-four on 2-point conversion attempts.  Hahnville running back Devonte Clarke answered early in the second quarter with his first of two touchdowns on the night.

Hahnville was haunted by a series of mistakes early, including a fumbled punt recovered by the Wildcats, and a succession of personal fouls that gave East St. John great field position. Following the personal fouls, however, the defense redeemed itself with a key fourth-down stop.

Hahnville defensive lineman Federick Brown put the game away with a fumble recovery returned 23-yards for the touchdown.

Running back Devonte’ Cravin also had a productive night, scoring Hahnville’s other two touchdowns, including Hahnville’s only offensive touchdown of the second half.

Hahnville will face H.L. Bourgouis at home Oct. 22.
