All these teams are preparing for regionals in two weeks. Hahnville girls dominated the field events, placing first in 5 of the 7 events. Hahnville boys had some healthy competition, trading first place in field events with Destrehan. Chaz Washington, of Destrehan, placed first in both the boys shotput and discus throw while Chris Richard placed second in the boys triple jump with a jump of 42”01’. Marcus Campbell of Hahnville took first place in the boys triple jump with a jump of 44”08’.

Hahnville’s girls’ relay teams were unstoppable placing first in the 4×100, 4×200, and 4×400 meter relay. However, in the other running events they traded first place back and forth with the girls from Destrehan.

Coach Frontha, the head coach for both the boys and girls track team at Destrehan, realizes that he has a young team. Both of his teams are comprised of mostly freshmen and sophomores. “We have our ups and downs, and injuries have kept some of our better runners off the field,” said Coach Frontha. “However, others have stepped up and are working extremely hard.” Chazz was named MVP of field events and I am looking for him to go far.” “Chris Richard is my top long jumper and triple jumper.” “I am expecting him to do well.”

“My girls are strong in running events,” said Frontha. “Shaquieda Wells and Erica Howard are outstanding.” Shaquieda easily placed first in the 100 meter dash, and the 200 meter dash. Erica took first place in the 100 meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles. Destrehan distant runners, Ajantha Ramachandran, and Natashia Swan are both persistent and consistent in the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter run. “The idea is to have as many qualify at the regional as possible,” said Frontha. “We continue to get strong and to get better each time we have the opportunity to run.”
