Hahnville blows out Ehret, Destrehan comes from behind for win

Destrehan and Hahnville will both start off the 2009 season in the win column, with the Tigers destroying John Ehret 42-0 and the Wildcats coming from behind to top Helen Cox 25-22.

Hahnville displayed the offensive firepower that led to their No. 2 state ranking, with quarterback Brian Ensminger, running back Alfred Blue and a talented group of receivers putting on a show for the Tiger faithful.

Hahnville scored 21 points in both the first and second quarters, and relied on a shutdown performance from their defense to keep the game a blowout.

Blue rushed for 119 yards and three touchdowns in the first half, with Ensminger completing a 45-yard strike to Derek Howard to set up one of those scores.

Ensminger also connected with James Butler for a 33-yard touchdown in the first half.

Destrehan, meanwhile, had things a little tougher.

The Wildcats took an early 7-0 lead on a 53-yard completion from Taylor Dunn to Kyron King, but Helen Cox stormed back to start the second with Cedrick Kelly finding Vernon Lewis in the endzone on an 8-yard pass. Cox then took an 8-7 lead on a 2-point conversion run by Destin Parquet.

The Wildcats did take the lead before the half, however, with Dunn connecting with King on another touchdown – this one for 28 yards. Marshall Charles ran in a 2-point conversion to put Destrehan on top 15-8.

Neither team managed to get on the board in the third, which made things really interesting in the fourth.

Cox scored early on, but missed a 2-point conversion attempt and still trailed the Wildcats 15-14. Cox would get on the board again shortly after, this time making the 2-point conversion to jump ahead 22-15.

The Wildcats failed to score on their next possession, but forced Cox’s punter out of the endzone for a safety to cut the lead to 22-17.

Dunn then connected with Charles on an 8-yard touchdown to seal the game and the Wildcats made yet another 2-point conversion to end the scoring.
