Former DHS QB leads team to comeback win

Former Destrehan High School quarterback Wynrick Smothers had an outstanding game Saturday, leading the University of Central Arkansas to a come-from-behind, 34-14 victory over Nicholls State.

After trailing 14-13 at halftime, Smothers heated up the football field in Conway, Ark. by completing 31 of his 43 passes for 289 yards and a touchdown. UCA pulled ahead in the third quarter and Smothers was red hot throughout the second half throwing the ball.

Nicholls State head coach Charlie Stubbs was impressed with the former Wildcat standout.

“I thought (Wyrnick) Smothers had an outstanding game, especially in the second half,” Stubbs said. “We tried to get extra pressure on him and he did an outstanding job reading where the blitz was coming from and hitting the ‘hot’ man downfield. He was very accurate throwing the ball and he made some plays with his feet to buy extra time.”

Stubbs said that Smothers ability to limit turnovers was also impressive.

“The other thing about Smothers is that we have some ballhawks in our secondary, but he didn’t put the ball in an area that could lead to a turnover,” he said. “We’ve seen him before and always been impressed, but he was outstanding this afternoon throwing the ball, and more importantly, protecting the football.”
