Kicking it off: Destrehan visits Hahnville for football season opener next week

Patrick LeBranch of Destrehan

Better late than never – prep football season begins in St. Charles Parish next week, and what a way to kick it off.

Destrehan will visit Hahnville next Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. (Sept. 25), starting the season for both teams after Hurricane Ida necessitated the cancellation of the first three weeks for each team.

Before the season, the game was initially scheduled a day prior, on Sept. 24, for traditional Friday night competition. The afternoon start a day later will allow the teams to play in daylight and eliminate the need for stadium lighting should Tiger Stadium not be powered by that date.

The Tigers and Wildcats each returned to practice on Monday, allowing for two full weeks of practice to lead up to the rivalry clash, which will also open District 7-5A competition for each.

While the DHS/HHS game was unofficially targeted as the goal date to open the season, there was no official decision until Thursday.
