Destrehan continues to build momentum with shutout win

Destrehan's Duquan Dabney races away for a touchdown reception in the first quarter of Destrehan's win over Central Lafourche Friday night.

With a matchup with rival Hahnville on the horizon, Destrehan made sure it remained running full stride Friday night.

The Wildcats defeated visiting Central Lafourche, 41-0, the Wildcats scoring all of its points in the first half at Wildcat Stadium.

Jackson Fields threw two touchdown passes in the win, one to Duquan Dabney and another to Phillip Wright III. Jabari Mack, Malachi Dabney and Tony Crump all scored rushing touchdowns, with Mack scoring twice on the night – including a 63-yarder.

Myd Gilbert, Jayden Bailey and Charles White each intercepted passes for Destrehan (5-3, 3-1).

“We wanted to come out and string together another solid performance, execute well,” said Destrehan head coach Marcus Scott. “We were happy with the way the kids played. They had good effort and discipline in their drops … we were able to take advantage of some obvious passing situations tonight (defensively) to force turnovers.”

This was Fields’ third game back as quarterback after an injury suffered in Week One against Catholic-Baton Rouge sidelined him for a month of action.

“I feel like tonight, we clicked on all cylinders,” Fields said. “Offensive line blocked great, receivers were making plays – I think that builds great momentum into next week … getting hurt week one, it was definitely a bump in the journey, but I feel like we’re back and better than ever. I’m excited to be back.”

Destrehan had another bump in the road early in Friday’s game – a fumble on the opening kickoff led to Central Lafourche starting off deep in Destrehan territory. The Wildcats’ defense stood tall and held Central without points.

The Wildcats’ offense quickly put points on the board from there, driving more than 90 yards including a 61-yard strike from Fields to Duquan Dabney to make it 6-0 with 7:40 left in the first quarter.

DHS linebacker Myd Gilbert intercepted a pass and returned it to the Central 5 yard line to set up another touchdown, this one on Jabari Mack’s 5-yard run from the Wildcat formation.

Gilbert came up big again at the start of Central Lafourche’s next drive, making a tackle for a loss of five on first down. That led to an eventual punt. Destrehan marched down the field, scoring on Malachi Dabney’s 2-yard touchdown run, one set up by a Fields pass to Wright down to the CLHS 2.

Destrehan led 19-0 going into the second quarter. Quickly, that lead grew to 26-0 when Mack scored on a 64-yard touchdown run.

The Trojans (3-4, 2-2) fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and it was another Fields to Wright connection, this time resulting in a touchdown. A 2-point conversion run by Michael White made it 34-0 with 10:30 still to play in the first half.

Tony Crump punched in Destrehan’s final touchdown of the night later in the second quarter. The two teams played to a running clock in the second half.

Destrehan now shifts its attention across the river, as Hahnville will travel to Wildcat Stadium next Friday night. With Destrehan having just a single district loss, a win over the Tigers would bring a potential district championship into focus, as HHS currently sits alone in first place in 7-5A without a district loss.
