Luling guide wins top award in Venice IWFA Tournament

Peter Young from Luling won the top guide award for helping his anglers catch the most fish overall during the IWFA tournament in Venice last week.

Young’s anglers had a total of 9,955 points, which included 257 redfish, nine trout and one flounder. Twelve of the redfish were bull reds.

The International Women’s Fishing Association set an impressive record during the 2013 Louisiana Slam Venice tournament held June 10-12. During the three-day catch-and-release competition, 24 anglers caught a record 2,209 fish.

Women from all over the U.S. come to Venice for this annual event and draw different guides to fish with each day. They get points for each redfish, speckled trout, flounder and bass they catch with the most points being awarded for bull redfish. To make things interesting, only tournament-approved 8-pound test line can be used to catch the fish. The winner of this year’s event and the prized solid gold Venice Slam medallion was Merrily Simmons of Sarisota, Fla. Simmons’ catch included an amazing 22 bull redfish on the last day while fishing with guide Bobby Warren.
