Ed Reed & Valero raise $53K for foundation with golf tournament

The Ed Reed/Valero St. Charles Golf Classic held yesterday at both Belle Terre Country Club and Riverlands netted $53,000 for the Ed Reed Eye of the Hurricane Foundation.

Three hundred players turned out to participate in the daylong event that included morning and afternoon tee times for this unique charity that reaches out to charitable organizations and other worthy causes in the St. Charles Parish area.

Ed Reed, who currently plays free safety for the Baltimore Ravens of the NFL, established the foundation to provide resources for various charities and community causes in the St. Charles Parish area.

Though he lives out of state, Reed keeps close ties to his hometown roots, hosting an annual football camp for children 7-17 as well as the Ed Reed River Parish Jamboree each year.

Plans are in the works for next year’s event.

Valero’s Community Involvement The Ed Reed/Valero St. Charles Golf Classic is just one of the many events that Valero St. Charles has participated in over the past four years of its existence in St. Charles Parish.

The Louisiana agencies receiving donations provide a variety of services from therapeutic programs for children with a disability to educational and recreational programs for at-risk youth. In 2006, Valero St. Charles gave $1 million to 30 children’s charities.

Valero St. Charles is a significant supporter of United Way.

Last year with the help and generosity of its employees, the company donated over $800,000 to the United Way of St. Charles.

With over 12,000 volunteer hours in 2006, Valero employees participate in countless community activities, including the recent Children’s Miracle Network Telethon to benefit Children’s Hospital in New Orleans, held on June 3 at WDSU-TV studios.
