East St. John hands Destrehan second district loss

In District 6-5A, Destrehan has had little trouble picking up wins. But one team has stood in their way all season – the East St. John Wildcats.

East St. John, who claimed the district championship last Friday, has handed Destrehan their only two district losses. The Wildcats lost to East St. John on Jan. 25 in a 50-48 thriller, then suffered a 58-47 defeat on Friday.

East St. John is currently 8-0 in district play.

With East St. John needing a win to lock up the district title, Destrehan gave the home team all they could handle. The Wildcats led 15-12 after the first quarter, and took a 25-22 lead into the break.

In the third quarter, Destrehan held Dutchtown to only 10 points as they took a 35-33 lead into the final frame.
But that’s when East St. John showed their worthiness as a district champ.

They pulled away early in the fourth with a 13-4 run that gave them a 46-39 lead. Destrehan fought back and pulled to within two points at 48-46 with less than two minutes left, but East St. John went on a 10-1 run that officially put the game away.

Joseph Williams Jr. led East St. John with 16 points, while Marcus Robinson netted 12. Destrehan’s B.J. Singleton led his squad with 16 points.

The Wildcats will wrap up district play when they travel to St. Amant at 7 p.m. on Friday.
