Dunn scores twice to lead Hahnville past Woodlawn

Hahnville needed to show some mettle offensively after a preseason that saw the Tigers struggle mightily on that side of the ball, and at Woodlawn Friday night, it did just that to score a 24-14 victory over the host Panthers.

Drew Dunn scored two touchdowns to lead the Tigers (1-0), scoring once on the ground and once through the air, the second on a pass from Mike Neal. Dunn rushed for 62 yards and tallied 80 total yards on the night. Anthony Williams rushed for 84 yards and Norquell Flowers added 66. As a team, Hahnville rushed for 221 yards.

“Jamborees and scrimmages tell you what you can and can’t do, and tonight we focused on the things we know we can do well,” Hahnville coach Nick Saltaformaggio said. “And that’s getting Anthony Williams and Norquell Flowers on the perimeter and Drew Dunn and Devonte Clark inside between the tackles.

“We know our run game is going to be solid and strong. We want to create a line of physicality and run play action off it. We did it tonight. I thought we were pretty efficient. Our offensive line was much improved and I thought we controlled the line of scrimmage.”

Neal and Dunn connected for an 18-yard touchdown pass with 5:55 remaining in the game, which pushed HHS to a 17-14 advantage. After a defensive stop, Neal added a 1-yard touchdown to push things out of reach for Woodlawn.

Neal completed 7 of 13 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown on the night.

Dunn scored the night’s opening touchdown on a 9-yard first quarter run.

“He was outstanding in every way,” Saltaformaggio said. “He’s a guy who can take a game over. He’s deceptively fast, but he’s got incredible power, the strongest guy on the field. He’s the kind of kid you win championships with. He wills his team forward.”

Woodlawn tied the game on a Malik Brady interception return. Matthew Boyer gave Hahnville a 10-7 lead on a 40-yard field goal.

The Tigers recorded a red zone stop after Woodlawn drove 69 yards on its first drive of the night.
