DHS Wildcats rank at No. 18 in country

Undefeated football team receives MaxPreps award

Even though they haven’t played a football game in almost two months, the accolades continue to roll in for the Destrehan Wildcats. The 2007-08 state champions were recently honored by national high school sports site MaxPreps for finishing as their No. 18 team in the nation. The rating took into account Destrehan’s schedule and their overall record. The Wildcats finished with a perfect 15-0 record, with five of those wins coming in their district. Their strength rating was 38.4.

“It’s great to get national recognition from a big site such as MaxPreps,” Destrehan head coach Stephen Robicheaux said. “We are really excited that our great season was recognized.”

The Wildcats strutted out to five opening season wins before even getting into district play. The team blanked Karr 31-0 to start the season, and then took down St. James, Terrebonne, Higgins and Ehret by a combined score of 130-35.

Once in district though, things got a lot more interesting. The Wildcats picked up a thrilling, double-overtime win over arch rival Hahnville, and then held on for back to back close wins against St. Amant and East St. John.

The team then managed to stay perfect on the regular season with a 51-6 beat down of East Ascension and a 9-7 win over Dutchtown.

Throughout the postseason, the Wildcats reached another level altogether. After walking all over West Jefferson to kick off the playoffs, Destrehan knocked out Carencro, St. Paul and Westgate, allowing 28 total points in those three contests.

In the state championship, they continued to excel, dominating Acadiana from start to finish for a 41-21 state championship victory.

And if there was such a thing as a national high school football playoffs, Robicheaux feels his team would have more than held their own.

“I don’t know how we would have done, but I think that if we played the way we did at the end of the season, we could play with anybody,” he said.
