DHS to take on HHS this week in baseball

Coach says team has rebounded from losses

The Destrehan High School Wildcat Baseball Team started the season 9-0. After a few losses their current record is 17-7, managing to secure their place in the district tournament. This year will be the team’s fifth trip to the state tournament. “We started the season with a few difficulties, but I feel we have rebounded since then,” said Head Coach Marty Luquet. The team finished second in the district with an upcoming game against archrival Hahnville High School to take the district title. “We need to sweep HHS this week,” said the coach. Hahnville currently has a two game lead over DHS. “The team is consistent on the mound, although we struggle at times,” the coach continued.

After losing five seniors last year including Beau Jones, “We only have two seniors this year, Kyle Gardere and Lynn Matherne. Matherne is a pitcher and first baseman and Gardere is the shortstop and also pitches,” said Coach Luquet.

“Our top pitcher is Kyle Schnowski with a record of 5 and 2 against Hahnville High School,” said Luquet. “A surprise player is Trey Watkins, a leader in hitting and center fielder. Watkins has a hit average of .472 and he triggers the team’s offense,” said the coach.

“The team is young but the talent is there. It is a matter of maturing together,” said the coach.
