While the Wildcats have relied heavily on their pitching rotation this season, they showed that they have plenty of offensive firepower to back those pitchers up.
Destrehan put up 24 runs in two games to knock off both Vandebilt Catholic and Episcopal last week.
Against Vandebilt, Destrehan (18-3) scored 11 runs in the first two innings on their way to a 12-7 victory. Brock Benedetto got the Wildcats started in the first with an RBI single and Kade Granier followed with a triple to extend Destrehan’s lead to 2-0. Singles by Sam Steib and Blake Hymel put the Wildcats up by four.
Destrehan put the game away with a seven-run second inning. Benedetto once again served as the offensive catalyst by singling in a run and Granier added to the Destrehan lead with an RBI single to right field.
Back-to-back singles by Steib and Tanner Hayes gave Destrehan a 9-0 advantage and Brewer capped the inning by drawing a bases loaded walk that put the Wildcats up 11-0.
Vandebilt chipped into the Destrehan lead with a combined six runs in the third and fourth frames, but the Wildcats were able to hold on for the 12-7 win despite four errors.
Hymel picked up the win for Destrehan, giving up five hits and allowing five runs in 3.1 innings. Granier pitched a perfect seventh inning by striking out two to secure the victory.
Benedetto led Destrehan from the plate by going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Granier and Steib each had two hits and two RBIs while Hayes, Hymel and Ryan Brewer each drove runs across the plate.
The Destrehan offense continued its surge in a win against Episcopal. Though the Wildcats fell behind 1-0 after the first, they scored three runs in the second to take the lead for good on their way to a 12-2 win.
Pinch-runner Erik Vinnet tied the game in the third after coming home on a wild pitch and Destrehan took a 2-1 lead on a sacrifice fly by Brennan Breaud. Jace Weber extended the lead with a single to left.
In the fourth, Destrehan blew the game open with six runs. A two-RBI double by Brewer put the Wildcats on top 5-2 and Benedetto increased the lead by another run with a sacrifice fly.
Hymel put the finishing touches on the inning by smashing a ground ball through left to give Destrehan a 9-2 lead.
The Wildcats scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game due to the mercy rule.
Austin McDonald picked up the win for Destrehan after giving up only three hits and striking out three in five innings.
For the second game in a row, Benedetto led the Wildcats from the plate, finishing with three RBIs on one hit. Brewer went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, while Weber, Granier, Hayes and Hymel all drove in runs in the game.
Destrehan will travel to take on Parkview Baptist at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and will host Higgins on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
