Destrehan runs over Central Lafourche, 42-7

Destrehan used its powerful ground attack to cruise past Central Lafourche 42-7 on Friday.

The Wildcats scored on their opening drive, which ended with an 8-yard touchdown pass to John Williams from Marquise Darensbourg. On Destrehan’s next series, running back Will Matthews broke through the Central Lafourche defense for a 51-yard run.

Two plays later, Darensbourg carried the ball in from a yard out to put the Wildcats on top 14-0.

Neither team had much success moving the ball in the second quarter, but Central Lafourche advance into Wildcat territory thanks to a 15-yard pass interference penalty. However, Destrehan blocked a 23-yard field goal attempt to keep Central Lafourche off the board.

The Wildcat offense got back on track in a big way in the third quarter. After a nice gain by Kirk Merritt, Matthews rumbled 35 yards to the Central Lafourche 1-yard line and took the ball into the endzone on the next play for a 21-0 lead.

On Destrehan’s next possession, Matthews rushed for 29 yards to the Central Lafourche 32. Darensbourg found Merritt for a 26-yard gain that set the stage for Matthews’ second touchdown of the night – a 6-yard run up the middle.

Central Lafourche got on the board with a 2-yard touchdown run by Thomas Wesley, but Destrehan answered right back.

This time, Merritt took control with a 22-yard run to move the Wildcats into Trojan territory. Merritt took the ensuing handoff, ran to his right and got hit before bouncing back to the left sideline for a 20-yard gain.

On the next play, Merritt took the ball in from 5 yards out to put the Wildcats up 35-7.

The Wildcats will return home on Friday, Oct. 24 to face South Lafourche. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
