Destrehan rolls over Lutcher, 35-13

Destrehan quarterback Donovan Isom connected with receiver Kurk Merritt on touchdown passes of 39 and 60 yards to help the Wildcats cruise past Lutcher 35-13 in the Ed Reed River Parishes Jamboree.

Isom and the rest of the Destrehan offense was impressive throughout the contest. On the team’s opening drive, Isom threw to four different receivers as the Wildcats marched down the field. The drive ended with a 1-yard touchdown plunge by junior running back Will Mathews.

Lutcher answered back after a big kickoff return by Destin Porter gave the Bulldogs a short field, but Destrehan’s offense couldn’t be stopped. Facing a 4th and 1, Mathews picked up the first down for Destrhean with a 5-yard run. Isom then found junior Alfred Smith for a 39-yard score to put the Wildcats up 15-7 with 7:25 left in the first half.

The Wildcats added to their score on their next possession, with Isom lacing a beautiful pass down the right sideline that landed in the hands of Merritt for a 60-yard score.

Isom found Merritt again a few minutes later for a 39-yard touchdown that put Destrehan up 28-7 with 59 seconds left in the opening half.

After Lutcher scored on their opening drive of the second half, the Wildcats put the game away with a 20-yard run by Mathews that iced the 35-13 Destrehan win.

The Wildcats will open the season on Friday, Sept. 6 when they take on West Jefferson at home at 7 p.m.
