Destrehan remains undefeated in district

Beats John Ehret 42-24

Destrehan remains undefeated in district play after cruising past John Ehret 42-24 on Friday night.

Though the Wildcats (4-2, 2-0) ended up with a big win, Ehret (0-6) went toe-to-toe with Destrehan for much of the first half.

The Wildcats started fast and scored on their first possession after a 21-yard touchdown pass from junior Donovan Isom to sophomore running back Will Mathews. The defense got in on the scoring on the next series, sacking Ehret quarterback Darrel Williams on back-to-back plays. On third down, the snap sailed over Williams’ head out of the end zone for a safety.

Destrehan, quickly up 9-0 in the first four minutes of the game, added yet another score to end the first quarter. Isom connected with receiver Michael Smith for a 33-yard touchdown, but the Wildcats failed to pick up the two-point conversion and led 15-0.

That’s when Ehret struck back. Williams bombed a 78-yard touchdown with 1:42 left in the opening quarter to bring his team within eight at 15-6. On their opening drive of the second quarter, Ehret inched even closer after Devin Johnson nailed a 41-yard field goal to make the score 15-9 with 11:05 left to go until the half.

Ehret soon capitalized on a Destrehan turnover after Robert Green intercepted Isom and returned the ball to the Destrehan 19. Williams connected with Da’quan Jenkins on a 9-yard touchdown pass that gave Ehret their first lead of the game at 16-15.

Things went from bad to worse for the Wildcats. A high snap on their next offensive series sailed 38 yards over the head of Isom, who recovered the ball at his team’s 7-yard line. Destrehan was unable to pick up the first down and punted the ball back to Ehret.

However, Destrehan cornerback Denzel Arceneaux came up with a huge interception to give the momentum back to the Wildcats. Starting at the Ehret 49, Isom picked up 36 yards on the ground to start the drive. Mathews finished it a play later with a 13-yard touchdown run. The Wildcats once again failed to pick up the two-point conversion, but still had the lead at 21-16 with a little more than 5 minutes until the half.

But the Wildcats weren’t done yet.

While on the run, Isom gunned a 46-yard pass to Smith, who hauled it in at the Destrehan 5-yard line. On first and goal, Isom bullied his way through the middle for a touchdown to give the Wildcats a 28-16 lead.

The Wildcats were unable to add to the lead in the third, but picked up two more scores in the fourth for the final margin.
